First in a Series of Environmental Statements

Environmental management has always been high on the agenda at PrimeAsia Leather Company. In March 2005 PrimeAsia became one of the first tanneries in China to receive ISO 14001 accreditation. They are continually looking into ways in which they can minimize the impact of their business on the environment. Rising oil prices and the renewed focus on the impact of greenhouse gases on global warming, has prompted the management team to look for ways in which energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions could be reduced.

They found one solution right next door. The Yue Yuen industrial park, in Huangjiang, generates much of its own electricity and in the process creates large quantities of waste steam. At the same time, PrimeAsia operates 3 boilers to generate steam for use within its process.

The management of both Yue Yuen and PrimeAsia saw the potential for recycling the steam generated by the power plant and, in September 2006 with careful planning and investment, they were able to commission a system to collect, transfer, and utilize the steam within the PrimeAsia facility. The result has been a 50% reduction in their usage of heavy fuel oil, water and electricity previously employed in the generation of steam.

By mid 2007, an expansion of the system will allow PrimeAsia to meet all of it's steam requirements using recycled steam. PrimeAsia's Carbon Dioxide emissions will be reduced by over 19,500 tons and will save the company over 1.7 million gallons of heavy fuel oil, 23,000 gallons of water and 260,000 KW hours of electricity per year.
